What are NFTs, what is the Metaverse, and what is XR?  By looking at how these concepts have evolved since the 1950s we are better able to understand the role intellectual property must play in their regulation today.  

Mark Metzeling discusses recent cases concerning intellectual property rights in the Metaverse with reference to Australian law; and concludes with salient practical considerations you’ll want to implement.

Mark Metzeling is a Principal at Macpherson Kelley.  His career began with an Applied Science Biochemistry degree before his move into intellectual property law.  He has been listed as a leading lawyer in the WTR 1000 in Australia each year from 2018 to 2023 for both prosecution and strategy, and IP transactions.  He is also ranked as an IP Star for both Trade Marks and Patents by Managing Intellectual Property, and as one of the top 1700 IP professionals in the world by WIPR Leaders since 2021.
