    On 31 July 2025 at 5pm, join our panelists Kate Beattie KC, David Shavin KC and Christian Dimitriadis SC to discuss the recent decision of the Full Court in Sandoz AG v Bayer, and whether it changes the law of inventive step in Australia.

    Kate Beattie SC specialises in intellectual property litigation, with extensive experience in complex patent disputes. Kate has a background in pharmacology and regularly acts for pharmaceutical and healthcare companies. She also advises on trade practices and commercial disputes, particularly those involving scientific expert evidence.  She holds a Bachelor of Science majoring in pharmacology and toxicology, a Bachelor of Laws (First Class Honours) from Monash University and a Master of Law (First Class Honours) from the University of Cambridge.

    She acted for Bayer in the litigation between Bayer and Sandoz.

    David Shavin KC practises primarily in Patent Law and Intellectual Property generally, Competition, Telecommunications, Administrative, Corporations and Commercial Law and appellate work.  Over the last 40 years, David has had extensive trial and appellate experience in Australia in the Federal Court and High Court, focused heavily, but not exclusively, on patents (especially pharmaceutical and life sciences, and software and business methods), trade marks and competition and administrative law, including Aristocrat, Myriad and Calidad. He appeared for Bayer in the litigation between Bayer and Sandoz.

    Christian Dimitriadis SC commenced his practice at the Bar in 2001 and has been a member of Nigel Bowen Chambers since that time.  He was appointed Senior Counsel in 2014. Christian specialises in intellectual property law, including patent, copyright and trade mark matters.  He regularly appears in the Federal Court of Australia, both at first instance and on appeal, and has appeared in a number of leading intellectual property cases in the High Court of Australia.  He also appears in the Australian Patent Office, the Copyright Tribunal of Australia, the Australian Trade Marks Office and other relevant administrative tribunals. He acted for Sandoz in the litigation between Bayer and Sandoz

    Clare Cunliffe will facilitate the discussion. She appeared for Sandoz in the litigation between Bayer and Sandoz.
